なん [nan] vs. なに [nani] for “What”

The kanji for “what” is . The kanji can be read as either なん [nan] or なに [nani]. The following the rules for なん [nan] VS なに [nani].


1. Use なん [nan]

  • Before counters (asking number)

    Example:いま、なんじ ですか。= What time is it now?


  • Before words starting with d-, t-, or n-sounds

    Example:これは なん ですか。= What is this?


2. Use なに [nani]

  • The other cases.

    Example:なにを のみますか。= What will you drink?
