Katakana Learning Tools

Updated: Apr 28

Japanese uses three types of characters: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

Once you’ve learned Hiragana, it’s a good idea to start studying Katakana. Both Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic systems, meaning each character represents a single sound, and they cover essentially the same set of sounds.

Function of Katakana

Katakana is mainly used to represent foreign sounds (loanwords), while Hiragana is used for native Japanese words. Because of this, your name is usually written in Katakana unless it is Japanese.

For most of people, Katakana is harder and takes more time compared to Hiragana. So, please be patient and take your time to master Katakana.

Katakana Deck

I’m excited to share the Katakana flashcard decks with you! The letters are divided into four separate files so you can add them to your flashcard app as you progress:

[Katakana decks for flashcards apps]

  1. Gojuuon – Basic letters

  2. Dakuon – Modified letters (with ゛and ゜)

  3. Youon – Combined sounds like キャ、シュ、チョ

  4. New Sounds – Special combinations used to represent foreign sounds (such as ファ and ティ). These combinations do not exist in Hiragana.

The decks are in CSV format, which works with most popular flashcard apps—including Anki! 📚✨

Download the ones and start learning at your own pace.Happy studying! 😊

Katakana Games

I wanted to share a few of fun and helpful Hiragana practice games with you. These tools are a great way to strengthen your skills and make practice more enjoyable!

  1. Katakana Quiz

This one is my favorite—it’s simple, practical, and super effective! You can test yourself on specific Katakana letters and focus on areas you want to improve:

    • Gojuon (Monographs)

    • Dakuon (Monographs with diacritics)

    • Youon (Digraphs)

    • Youon of Dakuon (Digraphs with diacritics)

  2. Dr. Lingua

This game is unique and fun! It challenges you to recognize Hiragana even with font variations, so you’ll never be tricked by different styles of writing.

  3. Genki Study Games

The Hiragana game on this site is a fun and interactive way to practice! It gives you multiple-choice questions to test your reading skills. If your Hiragana reading accuracy is below 50%, this game is a great place to start.

    To get started:

    • Select "Kana" from the menu.

    • Then, choose either Hiragana or Katakana to begin.

Enjoy practicing, and remember—it’s all about progress, not perfection!
